A closer look
at the section of track. Since the right-of-way is slowly being reclaimed
by nature and is once again becoming a forest, leaves from the trees cover the
track bed.
Interesting picture
here. The southbound tracks are completely visible, but the northbound
tracks are almost engulfed by trees and plants.
A baseball field was built on the right-of-way. Although not displayed
in this picture, a fence surrounds the park. The park was built on land
that occupied a large area of the Rockaway Beach line.
Take a close
look at the rail road ties. They were fairly thick, and even to this day,
they seem rather strong. They may not be able to support the weight of a
train, but they are thick and heavy. Notice the brush growing in the
middle of the roadbed.
