Now that we
have explored the Holland Tunnel exit, let's get back on track with the
LOMEX Virtual Tour as we head back over to Hudson and Canal Streets.
It is here that we see one of the Holland Tunnel entrances. The other
Holland Tunnel entrance is off of Varick Street.
The
tunnel entrance is handling cars and trucks with no problem this morning,
because it was around 11:30AM when the picture was taken. Come back
to this area around 5PM or so, and one will see the gridlock that ensues.
In the
middle of the entrance complex is an island. The island separates
the entrance to the Holland Tunnel from Hudson and Canal Streets to the
west, the entrance to the Holland Tunnel from Varick Street to the east,
and Watts Street to the south.
Here
is the Holland Tunnel portal, serving both Hudson/Canal and Varick Street
entrances. The Hudson/Canal Street entrance is served via the lane
on the left, the Varick Street entrance is served via the lane on the right.
Here
is the entrance to the Holland Tunnel for Varick Street.
It would have been interesting to see what the final LOMEX interchange
configuration would have looked like for this particular area.

Varick Street entrance to the tunnel.
