The overhead
directional signs located above the eastbound Williamsburg Bridge lanes.
Had the LOMEX been built, we may have witnessed another sign: a sign pointing
to the outer lane for continuation of I-78 to Brooklyn. The Bushwick
Expressway (I-78) was to be built in Brooklyn and Queens, with the intentions
of providing a direct highway connection of Lower Manhattan with JFK airport.
The Bushwick Expressway was killed in the early 1970's due to political
and community opposition of the proposed highway.
Will an electronic sign under the Queens/Bronx sign be appearing soon?
The rectangular gap at the bottom of the sign seems to indicate this possibility.
The
Empire State building can be seen from the Williamsburg Bridge.
Traffic
streaming off of the Williamsburg Bridge, as traffic heads west to Delancey
Street.
